Now that you’ve decided to get your headshots taken, here are a few pointers. These are not rules set in stone, but simple guidelines to help you get an effective headshot.
Solid colors work best. Bright colors and white can be tricky, and should not be treated as your main choice. Take your skin tone into consideration. Also, when selecting outfits, no patterns or logos.
A good, general combination of clothing to come with is two casual, two semi-causal, and two upscale. When it comes to clothing options, the more the merrier.
Stay away from trendy clothing. Styles come and go, and unless you can afford to update your headshots every three months, why date yourself.
No costumes or uniforms. If you are getting cast regularly in a certain type of role, it’s based on a look you already had. MIlitary fatigues are for Halloween parties.
Keep your hair and make-up simple.
Jewelry is distracting. Remember, it’s all about the face. Unless your piercings are a specific character trait, best to ignore them.
If you are aiming for a "character" headshot, there's no need to go overboard with it. Not shaving for a few days, or a pair of glasses with the right grin can go far. See side-by-side comparisons in my gallery.
