HEADSHOTS TIPS
Now that you’ve decided to get your headshots taken, here are a few pointers. These are not rules set in stone, but simple guidelines to help you get an effective headshot.
Solid colors work best. Bright colors aren't for everyone, and should not be treated as your main choice. Take your skin tone into consideration. Also, when selecting outfits, no patterns.
NO logos. We're marketing you, not your clothing.
A good, general combination of clothing to come with is two casual, two semi-causal, and two upscale. When it comes to clothing options, the more the merrier, so pack your car full of clothes.
You have multiple looks to choose from. If you want to use one for the current trend, that's fine, but don't make all your looks about that. The "Twilight" look and the hipster look are poular right now, but won't last forever. Make sure you have standard choices available to you.
No costumes or uniforms. If you are getting cast regularly in a certain type of role, it’s based on a look you already had. MIlitary fatigues are for Halloween parties.
If you are aiming for a "character" headshot, there's no need to go overboard with it. Arriving unshaven, or a pair of glasses with the right grin can go far. If you're frequently getting booked as a certain type when doing background work, let me know, and we can figure out how to shoot you. Specific character looks will come after you get an agent and they decide what they want to send you out for.
Keep your hair and make-up simple.
Ladies, bring heels. They won't be in the picture, so it doesn't matter what they look like. But they're invauable for posture in standing shots.
Jewelry is distracting. Remember, it’s all about the face. Unless your piercings are a specific character trait, best to ignore them. Same for necklaces.
Bring music! I'm set up for CD, iPod, and iPhone. Whatever helps you relax, or puts you in the proper mood. I can handle any and all types of music, so bring what works best for you.
